A container
for gathering the newly harvested grapes, it is made entirely of
chestnut and fir staves held together by four wooden hoops all with
a key, typical for this type of production, and has a capacity of
about 50 kg. of grapes.
Used
for transporting grapes to the cellars, then to the vat for boiling.
It measures 28 cm. in diameter at the base and about 40 cm. at
the rim with a height of about 60-70 cm.
The
vat continued to be used in Tuscany up until the first half of
the 1900s when, with the advent of the tractor, it was replaced
by plastic containers.
